August 1840 Garvagh Church Visitation List
Part 1

The 1840 visitation lists are rather more complex than the earlier lists. They have now been expanded into some sort of attendance record. These were not complied by James Brown so the style is a lot different. The compiler has used a ruled notebook of the sort that might be used for cash accounts and he has marks and numbers in the columns against each family showing their 'bonus points in the hereafter'. These are probably of less interest to most readers so have not been reproduced yet. Contact me if you are interested.

The compiler also sometimes added notes. To differentiate these original notes from the family names they are coloured green thus Names of family.

The compiler was also, certainly at the start of the list, searching for the ideal format, so the layout is a little inconsistent. All of these additions make the presentation here slightly more confusing so a horizontal ruler is used to divide the families and all families are numbered. Neither of these is in the original.

The column rulings are different on the left and right sides, so when first using the book in 1840 the compiler seems to have started using the left hand pages. He subsequently added notes and the first right hand side is dated 20th ??? 1850. Some of the other right hand (even numbered pages) also have 1850 dates. So in this list, odd numbered pages are mostly original 1840 and most of the even numbered pages are probably later amendments, circa 1850.

However, the 1794 list was apparently updated over as long a time as 18-20 years. The mere 10 years of this list is so so relevant and there seems no point in trying to split the list along an almost invisible join. So this list is presented in the order it is in the book: this has the effect of interlacing 1840 families with 1850 ones. Family numbers have been allocated sequentially, with F005 being on an odd page, therefore belonging to the earlier list and X001 being on an even page (so presumably being an update). In addition, entries that are in the handwriting corresponding to the 1850 additions are marked in blue.

Where pages are dated, the dates are noted.

At the bottom of each odd page are two numbers The first is a total of the number of persons listed on that page, which will be noted herein thus: 14. The second is the number of families, noted herein thus: 3. The last page is an addition of all the persons summed in each page and will be reproduced here. It would seem to reinforce the view that the list is two parts (1840 and 1850), but it is possible that the totals were added later and actually have nothing to do with the original list. If so, they are a complete red-herring!

To reinforce this red-herring theory, certain families (e.g. F077) seem to have been continued over the page (i.e. F078) but both parts of the family are included separately in the persons tally and also in the families tally.

To complicate things further, many of the names have been written once, then traced over again to reinforce them.

The notebook starts with the key to the points system, which is reproduced on that page, not here.
