Garvagh Church Visitation Lists
Index
These 'Visitation lists' are probably the single most interesting collection of documents available for genealogists searching for information in the Garvagh area. The original hand-written documents were photocopied by Lavonne Bradfield when she visited the area. She transcribed these to the computer, sent me a second copy and together we swapped many an email discussing the interpretations of the names and the handwriting. Where there was real difficulty in interpreting the writing, the transcriptions have been so annotated.
There is possible no other early Irish list that has had so much care and attention lavished on its transcription!
The lists
- 1796 A fascinating text of about 1954 names in some 405 families. The counts are those of James Brown himself.
- 1818 - July In 1818, James Brown again made a round of visits to his parishioners. This time he started a new list, and did it in two parts, July 1818 and August 1818.
- 1818 - August The second part of the 1818 list.
- 1825 Some 348 families.
- 1840 part 1 Some 348 families.
- 1840 part 2 Some 132 families. 693 individuals.
