Churchtown Church Baptisms

This is a transcription of the Churchtown Baptisms from the register, PRONI MIC IP/347A/1 which claims to cover baptisms 1840 to 1970 and marriages 1839 to 1845. Our photocopies cover the first 23 pages, baptisms up to 1863.

Like many of these documents, it is exceedingly hard to read, not only because the original hand is difficult at times, but also the script has faded. Furthermore the photocopy we have is a white-on-black copy of the microfilm of the original.

The original notes are arranged (roughly) in columns and the data is reasonably consistent, although the manner of presenting it, not always so. This table structure is used here. The original has been transcribed as accurately as possible. For instance Father's surnames have only been entered when they are present. Where we are unsure of the name (often scarcely legible) this has been indicated by (?) and sometimes a note has been added.

The original 'notes' were clearly made as transcriptions from conversations with the families, so sometimes spellings of the names are weird: if Rev Robert was unfamiliar with the real name, he would have to guess at the spelling - if you know what the name is and think of it pronounced with a broad local accent, the phonetic interpretations then usually make sense. Thus Gallagher is spelt as 'Golegher' and Halladay (we believe) as 'Honide'. Other similar phonetic spelling abound and many have been noted. There are also clear times when names were mis-heard or mis-remembered. Some have been noted and if you find others, let me know (via the 'Contact' button.

The pages of the original are not numbered, neither are the entries. Page and entry numbers are added here for ease of referring to the entries.

The original transcription was done by Barbara Braswell whose family comes from the area, which she has been studying for some while, so her local knowledge is good. Most of the notes are hers. Transcription checked and prepared for the WWW by Richard Torrens.

At this point, the astute reader will realise that there is a significant gap: page 19 ends January 1857 and page 20 starts 5 August 1858. Realising this, the original register was chencked and there is no data for the intervening period: it appears that a page has been torn from the register. We know that Robert has a son, Robert Lusk Torrens, in 1857 and the fact that this page is missing could be more than coincidence!
