(Major Hugh,3 Hugh,2 Sergeant Hugh 1), born July 20, 1780, died March 17, 1861. He married, on July 4, 1809, Jane McKeever, a sister of his brother-in-law, Matthew McKeever. Jane McKeever was born October 11, 1783, and died July 16, 1845.

(Major Hugh3 Hugh2 Sergeant Hugh1), born October 27, 1782, died January 11, 1868. He married twice. His first wife was Mary Gray, who was born in Ireland, November 15, 1783, and died September 25, 1822. They were married on September 20, 1803. His second wife was Margery Torrance, his cousin, who was born April 3, 1791, and died March 24, 1873. She was a daughter of James and Margaret (Stewart) Torrance.

Children of Hugh and Mary (Gray) Torrance were ten:

  2. ii. Sarah Torrance5 born August 12, 1806, died December 24, 1881; married, March 18,1859, Mr. McConnell, who died June 4,1874. Sarah (Torrance) McConnell died at the home of her sister, Hannah Greer, and is buried at Delmont, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where many other members of her family lie.

Her second marriage was May 20, 1876, to George Greer, who died August 16, 1891, at Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Delmont Cemetery.

  10. x. Colonel William Gray Torrance5 born September 1, 1824, in Pennsylvania; lived in Keokuk, Iowa, where he took an active part in the educational institutions of that place. He served as First Lieutenant of Company G, in the Mexican War; was Colonel of the 30th Iowa Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. He was killed in the Battle of Cherokee Station, in Alabama, October 21, 1883. The citizens of Keokuk, Iowa, erected a fine monument in his honor. On April 13, 1448, he married Ellen G. Martin, of Kentucky. Of their issue, the names of three are given:

51. William Gray Torrance4

(Major Hugh3 Hugh2 Sergeant Hugh1), born March 2, 1799, at Manordale, part of a large estate granted to William Penn, in Franklin Township, near the present town of Export, Pennsylvania, now the home of James Fenton Torrance, a great-great-grandson of Hugh and Mary (Fenton) Torrance. He served as Regimental Post Commander of the 115th Ohio Volunteers, on the staff of General Thomas; was an engineer and an instructor following the Civil War. He lived in Wellsville, Columbiana County, Ohio, where he was 109 connected with the "Wellsville Union", a newspaper. On July 15, 1821, he married Margaret Riddle McCabe, who was born December, 1802, and died August 28, 1880, a daughter of James McCabe, of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

In 1863, James Torrence was made Second Lieutenant of the Second Battalion of the 145th Pennsylvania Regiment. He served as Associate Judge of Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, for five years. He 114] married twice. His first wife was Mary Caldwell, born May 29, 1817. She was a daughter of William Caldwell, of Indiana, Pennsylvania. She died July 3, 1857. They were married April 14, 1835. His second marriage was on July 1, 1858, to Mrs. Nancy Jane Kier McEllhose, born December 9, 1824, died December 10, 1897. She was a daughter of James and Hannah Kier, of Elders Ridge. He enlisted in Company K, 105th Pennsylvania Infantry; was wounded twice in the battle of Chancellorsville; was present at General Lee's surrender; graduate of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1873. He was director of the First National Bank of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania; married, May 1,1879, Ida Jane Hildebrand, born February 1, 1853, daughter of Edward P. and Elizabeth Hildebrand. Issue, three:
    1. 1. Helen Torrence7 born March 27, 1881; married, September 18, 1901, David Blair. Issue, three:
      1. i. David Blair, Jr8 born April 2, 1903.

  8. viii. Elizabeth Hannah Kier Torrence6 born January 12, 1800, died in 1934, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylv ania; was an authoress, historian, and genealogist. As stated at the beginning of this chapter, had it not been for the notes she took from the old family Bible, it is doubtful if so complete a history of this branch of the family could have been written.
  9. ix. Ella Marcelia Torrence6 born March 3, 1863, lives at "Hill Top", her home in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania; unmarried. Her sister's records came into her possession and, due to her kindness, were placed in the hands of the compiler. 116

He married second, Margaret Thompson, of whom he had two children. He married third, Julia Ann Blakeley, of whom he had at least five children.

63. George Hugh Torrence6

(James5 Hugh4 Major Hugh3 Hugh2 Sergeant Hugh1), born May 8, 1848, died November 7, 1920. He enlisted in Company B, 206th Pennsylvania Volunteers, andserved throughout the Civil War. He married twice. His first wife was Virginia Caroline Miller, whom he married June 1, 1876. She was born 118 in 1852, and died January 31, 1890; was a daughter of Adam and Jane (Woodward) Miller. He married second, July 22, 1891, Ada E. Smith, born December 30, 1854, a daughter of John and Margaret (McKee) Smith, of Clarion County, Pennsylvania. No issue by the second marriage.

Children of George Hugh and Virginia Caroline (Miller) Torrence, were two:

  1. i. Henry Mondorf Torrence7 born March 17, 1877, at "Mount Joy", Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. He served throughout the Spanish-American War as Corporal, in Company 1,16th Pennsylvania Regiment. He took up his residence, on July 28, 1903, in Spokane, Washington.
  2. ii. Frank Miller Torrence7 born at "Mount Joy," Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, February 10,1879. He served as Second Sergeant in the Spanish-American War, is professor of engineering at Pennsylvania State College. Married, July 26, 1900, Sean Lindsay, born July 4, 1885, in Louisville, Kentucky, a daughter of Robert and Sarah (Tippine) Lindsay, who Came from Busby, Scotland. Issue, four:
    1. 1. Joseph Lindsay Torrence8 born December 10, 1910, died January 1, 1911.
    2. 2. Ruth Torrence8 born August 13,1012, married, September 28, 1935, Harry H. Balthaser.
    3. 3. Jean Floyd Torrence8 born December 12, 1915.
