Dear Susan, I think his mother's name should be McAfee, and yes, 
Bushmills would be the parish of his birth. There are still McCaughans 
in the area, though I don't think there are any in Ballyrock now. The 
ones I know are in Ballyhome, and are Reformed Presbyterian. If your 
grandfather was ordinary Presbyterian, it is more than likely that he 
went to Ballywatt Presbyterian church; or possibly to  Dunluce 
Presbyterian church in the town of Bushmills. I don't know for sure 
what school he went to; there was a school in Ballyrock until this 
year, but it is only about 75 years old, so maybe not open in his time. 
Otherwise possibly to Ballytober or Ballyhome.    Presumably his father 
was a farm labourer who had signed up to fight in the war. There are 
books on WW 1 men but I think they are on people who died. I'll see if 
I can find anything for you.
