These Dempseys and also the Derry city Toyes were Catholic. The use of
the name Richard or Dick in A*hadowey is interesting; maybe Richard
Toye of Derry city was originally from A*hadowey? (I have lost letters
on this keyboard;; apolo*ies! ) Richard's father was Edward. There is
very little doubt that the Toyes are ori*inally an Irish family;; some
became Protestant early on and some didn't. I have found Protestant
O'Toyes round Ballymoney, who still used the name Cornelius, which
probably preserves the Irish name Conchubar.
