My O'Kanes/Kanes are from Gorteade, a townland about 6 miles SSE of
Garvagh. My great-grandfather was Bernard Kane, born there about
1828. Don't know of any Joseph or Thomas in the family,
but... Bernard's wife was Mary McKay/McKie, b. 1832. They were
married circa 1851; first known child Nial born 1852, and baptized
(RC) in Maghera. Family were tenant farmers, and left Ireland
1861-63, went to NE England to Gateshead, across the Tyne River from
Newcastle. There the men worked in factories and shipyards as
laborers. They then began serial immigration to Philadelphia,
starting about 1882.
Any connection?
