...Among these was the Johnston family. In 1817 James Johnston married M=
artha Logan in the County Antrim, Ireland. In 1818 accompanied by his wi=
fe and his brothers he migrated to America. They landed at Quebec and sp=
ent some tiime in Canada and in Pittsburgh and in the year 1820 came dow=
n the Ohio River in a flatboat to Burlington. The brothers, Benjamin and=
 John settled on the Ohio side near South Point. In 1821 James bought a =
farm between 5th and 9th Streets West. He built perhaps two houses on th=
is land before he built the two-story frame house which stands at the in=
tersection of Jefferson Avenue and 7th Street, West. James Johnston had =
a respect of his neighbors and when he died he was buried at Burlington =
and had one of the largest and most impressive funerals of that period. =
On the trip down the Ohio, Martha Johnston, wife of James Johnston, gave=
 birth to a son who was named William. Among the other children was a da=
ughter, Sara, and a son, John L., who was ordained as an elder on Februa=
ry 8, 1859, and served until November 22, 1906. He married a Miss Kincai=
d of Ashland, Kentucky, and built the house at the sougheast corner of 6=
th Avenue and 2d Street, where John H. Meek now lives.
