...Among these was the Johnston family. In 1817 James Johnston married
Martha Logan in the County Antrim, Ireland. In 1818 accompanied by his =
wife
and his brothers he migrated to America. They landed at Quebec and spent
some tiime in Canada and in Pittsburgh and in the year 1820 came down =
the
Ohio River in a flatboat to Burlington. The brothers, Benjamin and John
settled on the Ohio side near South Point. In 1821 James bought a farm
between 5th and 9th Streets West. He built perhaps two houses on this =
land
before he built the two-story frame house which stands at the =
intersection
of Jefferson Avenue and 7th Street, West. James Johnston had a respect =
of
his neighbors and when he died he was buried at Burlington and had one =
of
the largest and most impressive funerals of that period. On the trip =
down
the Ohio, Martha Johnston, wife of James Johnston, gave birth to a son =
who
was named William. Among the other children was a daughter, Sara, and a =
son,
John L., who was ordained as an elder on February 8, 1859, and served =
until
November 22, 1906. He married a Miss Kincaid of Ashland, Kentucky, and =
built
the house at the sougheast corner of 6th Avenue and 2d Street, where =
John H.
Meek now lives.
