Subject: [4qd-bannvalley] RESPONSE TO CAROLE ABOUT WOODEND'S

In response to Carole and her quest for the Woodend family. Carole, I am
sure you have found Robert Woodend marrying Eliza Jane Nelson in the =
First
Garvagh Presbyterian Church records on the Bann Valley site. There is a
paucity of information about Woodend=92s anywhere. The IGI soundex=92s =
the name
to Wooden for any search in Ireland. This may be appropriate as the name =
may
have been converted/subverted over the years and =93ears to hand=94 (who =
among
us has not misheard a word). Robert and Eliza went to Scotland with the =
rest
of Eliza=92s family. Even so, there is still very little information =
about
Woodend/Wooden to be found in the generously transcribed lists on the
BannValley site.

Searching the IGI for an =93exact spelling=94 for Woodend brings up an
interesting entry for Agnes Neilson Woodend, Dumfries, Scotland. Plus =
there
is are two Alexander Woodend=92s from Londonderry. There is a John =
Woodend who
married a Sarah Stratten in Errigal, Londonderry in 1845; Margaret Jane =
b.
1876, Coleraine; Rebecca, 1867, Ahagadowey and I did trace one Woodend =
as
far away as Dublin. The name most strongly appears in Cumberland and
Lancashire, England. There are a few others and I am sure that the =
Derry
ones are probably related to each other. These examples are all =
extractions
and not patron submissions. Keep in mind that much of Ulster was =
populated
with families that migrated from Scotland and England, who in turn moved
back to their homelands, or out into the world, in search of work and
sustenance when the famine struck and later when the need for work drove
them to move about. Please don=92t hesitate to contact me off list if I =
can
provide you with more information.

Anne
