In 1889 in Iroquois County, Illinois, USA, a Henry Chestnut (known to be our relative) marries a Mary E. (Nellie) Bradley from Ireland. Her mother is also named Mary Bradley. A neighbor nearby from Ireland is named Higgins.

Henry Chestnut is the son of James Chestnut who came from Ireland, but Henry was born in Illinois.

My brother's information (but which I am receiving secondhand without the facts) leads him to look for the Bradleys in Derry.

Griffith's Valuation record, 1863, shows a Samuel Chestnut and a Jane Bradley living in close proximity in Movenis, Desertoghill Parish.

We are looking for information about ancestors or descendants of these persons in Ireland, and also any information about their immigration to America. Also any reference to Mary Bradley or Mary E. Bradley elsewhere of Derry.

I have found a Bradley family and a Chestnut family listed in the 1825 visitation records of the First Presbyterian Church of Garvagh. This is Samuel Chestnut. Also found marriage and birth records for some Chestnuts (David and Samuel), but not for any Bradleys.

Our thought is that the Bradleys and Chestnuts may have immigrated to the same area in Illinois and that our own Chestnut (Chesnut) family may be related to those who lived near the Bradleys in Ireland.

Our forebear, James Chestnut, who came over from Ireland, married an Elinor Cain from the Isle of Man, probably married in America.

We have known marriages of Chestnut forebears to people from the Isle of Man named Moore, Cannell, and Cain. We note that there is a Robert Moore living in Movenis near Samuel Chestnut and Jane Bradley. Does anyone know if the Moore family of Movenis had any connections with Moore relatives in the Isle of Man, probably St. Michael's Kirk? Would such a connection with people of the Isle of Man been likely in those days, say around 1860-1880?

Thanks for a message from anyone who might know anything with reference to these clues.

  Charlene Chesnut
