Re: [Bann Valley] Errors

Let me toss in my 2¢ worth...one has to be careful when looking at microfilms of original documents too. I "rented" a bad microfilm from one source some 15 years ago and determined that a name was "Hud". Just 3 weeks ago sks sent me a copy of the same marriage register page taken from another microfilm copy - the difference was like night and day. The name now appears to be "Hust" or "Heist" which is still a problem, but at least we can blame that on the minister's bad handwriting... ;-)

Hi everyone,

Just to follow up on Barbara Braswell's earlier sentiment.. We transcribers are only human! Yes, we do sometimes make mistakes. One person transcribes, a second proof reads before the 'document' is sent to Richard for insertion on the Bann Valley page. HOPEFULLY, that will uncover any issues. We can only record what is on the original document.. and where we feel there needs to be clarification, we leave transcriber's comments. Please also bear in mind that whoever completed the ORIGINAL document might have made a mistake with the date, name or what ever.

Let me give you two examples of how the General Registers Office (the Government department in charge of recording Births, Marriages and Deaths) can (and DOES sometimes) make mistakes.. I know one person whose birth certificate says she was born in November... when she was actually born in May.. and I know another person whose birth certificate actually says lists HIS sex as female!! Mistakes DO happen.. and sometimes at the highest level.

BUT, here is where YOU can help! If you DO see what you think is a mistake, check your source in the first instance.. then if you're 'happy' that there IS a mistake, email Richard or Barbara (or me!) with as much detail as you have!

Hi Listers,

It has been brought to my attention that some are
complaining the records on the Bann Valley site are full of
errors. I don't think there are any more problems with
these records than those on other sites. In fact I have
double checked a few times what Emerald Ancestry has against
what we have and ours are correct and theirs are in error.

PLEASE, if you do see a record that is not right or you
think is not right email me or Richard Torrens, the
"Listmaster", with the name of the church, the
record and the line number and we can check it against the
original and make a decision.

Thanks!
Barbara Braswell
