[4qd-bannvalley] ADMIN: pls read - the list's future

Guess everyone has now noticed that the genealogy www sites have been
reorganised and have moved from www.4qd.org to www.Torrens.org.uk.

Part of this move is that the facilities I now have available have
improved and one of those 'improvements' is the mailing list manager. I am
waiting for a couple of enhancements to the facilities however before
moving over the two mailing lists.

One of the advantages will be that it's going to be a lot easier for me to
edit and maintain the list archives. But if I am going to maintain the
archives (rather than allow the free-for-all it now is) I am going to need
to enforce better 'netiquette' on the mailing lists.

I have avoided doing this in the past as I really do not look forward to
constant having to nag members to stop top posting, stop excessive quoting
of previous emails, change the subject of the emial if necessary and to
turn off html. Such excessive nagging would drive some members away (so
might kill the lists - or do I wish to loose the members who can't be
bothered?) but if it worked it would make the lists and the archives
better for all.

One of the waited-for enhancements will be automatic removal of html
attachments to list postings.

So do any members care to discuss exactly how fierce I should be in
enforcing the rules? And exactly what rules should I enforce?

I know how nice a properly used mailing list is. But many list members
simply cannot be bothered to learn the rules of such a list. Also
Microsoft programs take no notice of the 'correct' netiquette for mailing
lists so actually make proper use less than easy (wish I could enforce use
of a fully netiquette-compliant (see link 2 below) email program as well -
but that's impossible!)

Once I have a consensus opinion from listers I will be able to re-write
the netiquette rule book!
