Re: [Bann Valley] Re: Welcome to BannValley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Don't forget to try the burial records.
I found my ancestors marriage certificate listing the name of the father and place of residence. Compared it with the Griffith's Valuation finding them and then located the father in the burial records giving me the family to 1776. I am not reading through Estate records, rent rolls and historical manuscripts for any other information.

Fastyre mie Boyd,

Many thanks for getting back to me and sorry for the delay in
responding to your previous message to this. Your advice is valuable.
The 'at death' point is a good one. I will look into that. I have
since found out that the church records were given over to PRONI, so
the marriage of Thomas is lost I fear. However, there is one other
angle to try and that is to search the newspapers for anything around
the marriage date. I could strike lucky.

I am certain that there were only Hendersons at Ballyagan, Garvagh. So
you would be right in saying any Hendersons on the site going back
would be relatives.

As an aside, I have visited Garvagh twice in the last 12months and had
a good look around. It was amazing to visit and think that my family
would have walked all around there. I visited Ballyagan, and stood in
my Great Great Grandfathers house.

My Great Uncle, Harry Henderson would have been well known in the
village - they oporated a bakery at the farm, and would take the carts
to the village.

I also oporate a site on Ancestry.com and Genes reunited in the hope
of 'finding a relative', or them finding me!

Many thanks

Bill

Hi Bill,

The Tithe Applotment Books are explained in my booklet on Donegal
Ancestry
at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/genbooklet.pd
f

The 1831 Census for Londonderry Index is the only scrap from all the
censuses which were destroyed either in the First World War of the
Civil
War. It is only an index giving the name of the Head of Household
and how
many males females and servants lived in the house along with their
religion. As such, it is useful to give a family's presence but as
you say,
that person could be an uncle or brother or... well almost anything,
so you
have putative ancestors but no links. On the other hand, if you
only have
one family of that name in the townland, why would it be anyone else
but the
father?

You need a marriage of someone post civil marriage in 1845, or from
a church
record, from that family, who gives his father's name. Or possibly
a death
post 1864, of the man in the Census, with a Present at Death, whom
you
recognise - say, son, Thomas.

I think someone else told you, you are operating at the limit of
Irish
genealogy but in the end, most of us get some fairly strong links
back to
1900 or even 1780ish. Give up at that point!

Btw, I lived in Garvagh til I was 5, my father having been born
there, but I
do not know it very well.

Fastyre mie Boyde,

Thanks for getting back to me. I am on the Isle of Man. Betwixt and
between
as you might say. This makes it very difficult for me to get over
there and
visit PRONI. I would need to take leave all the time and however
long it
would take. I have a researcher engaged currently who is good.

However, Thomas is proving very difficult to get past. He was born
on August
the 31st, 1816. This we got from a surviving relative we found.
I thought I was the only part of the family left. They have Thomas
Hendersons bible. We know how old he was when he died in 1902. He
was a
grand old chap. 15 children! We know there are Hendersons living at
that
house/farm well before him. But there is no link to say -yes- that is
Thomas's father. The next generation after him living there would
appear to
be a John Henderson. Again no link can be found. The marriage
records of
Thomas and Matilda would have given us Thomas's fathers name.

We think he had a brother, Archie from Garvagh village just down the
road.
He ran the tannery there. But again cant establish a direct link
other than
Archie's will where he leave £5 to his mother in Ballyagan - Sarah.
Thomas
is present as a witness.

How does that sound? The records you mention have been looked at,
but its
the links that are the problem?

I would be interested to know a little bit more about the references
you
mention in the tith applotment books and 1831 census and what
conclusions
you can draw? I am heavily reliant on my researcher, but have found
them to
be excellent so far. They found my relative, who I have since been
to visit
and photographed the family bible etc.

Many thanks

Bill
