RE: [Bann Valley] Re: visiting ancestral places
Having been fortunate to visit several of my ancestral places, and
really enjoy the experience, I agree with Lynn that contact needs to be
made before the visit - not only for good manners, but also those living
there may have interesting information which they would be more willing
to share if prewarned. Because I did not prewarn of my previous visits,
I didn't "knock on the door", so was unable to do any more than look
from the outside. Next time, I will be writing letters to introduce
myself and give a synopsis of my connection to the place.
Cheers
Sandra

Hi Linda;
The burial records are with the church records at PRONI, in my case I
went
to the church in Maghera and met with the archivist who was kind enough
to
have gone through the books before I got there and located the burials
of
the names that I was looking for. Unfortunately some of the burials at
the
St. Lurach's church are not noted on the burial records but yet the
headstones and information are there, so important to check both.
The marriage certificate I got through the Council office in
Magherafelt.
But the marriage records, baptismal records, death and burial records
should
all be at the PRONI and church as well.
The PRONI is the best way to go as the books held at the churches are
deteriorating.
I went to the church as I wanted to look around the cemetary so I sent
an
e-mail in advance asking to meet up with the archivist. I was visiting
in
the area anyway as I had located the house # on the Valuation maps and
was
going to the land that my ancestors lived on. I did not bother anyone
there
by the way simply went to the road and looked at the land.
That is something that I would like to see a discussion on somewhere -
going
to where your ancestors lived and knocking on people's doors. I don't
agree
with it myself, perhaps if you write ahead and they invite you but
showing
up and saying that my ancestors lived here and I'd look around -I think
is
in bad taste.
I am heading back in August again.
Lynn
