RE: [Bann Valley] Pollock, Boggs, McNeill, Sloan, Armstrong, Irwin

Rosemary,

Permit me to ask the obvious.

When you say you wish to get a "feel for the area" and visit "locations of
relevance", have you used the online Griffiths Valuation plus its associated
maps to find precisely where your Pollocks et al lived in the mid 1850s?

 http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_family_search_form.php

I assume this is your ancestor (in summary form) or his father:
Family Name 1 POLLOCK
Forename 1 ROBERT
Landlord
Family Name 2 HEYLAND
Forename 2 LANGFORD
Location
County LONDONDERRY
Barony LOUGHINSHOLIN
Union BALLYMONEY
Parish TAMLAGHT O'CRILLY
Townland DRUMOOLISH
Place Name DRUMOOLISH
Place Type TOWNLAND
Publication Details
Position on Page 4
Printing Date 1858
Act 15&16
Sheet Number 33
Map Reference 5;6;7

And this is the good folk of Drumoolish:

Combine the GV maps available at this website with a modern OS map and you
will find the most relevant location of all - the location of the family
homestead.

If you want to push further back, the most important source to view while
you are in NI is of course the Tithe Applotment Books. These are available
at Coleraine and Ballymoney libraries.

Oh, and if you can find it, youy should buy The Fairy Thorn, a book about
Kilrea. I am sure you have also seen Kernohan's book transcribed by Barb
Braswell on Richard's website as it too gives an excellent feel for the
area:

I have been a lurker for some years, but have rarely posted. However, I am
planning a visit to Ireland in April 2010, so the time has come to get down
to business.

Robert Pollock from Drumoolish emigrated to Australia in 1863. I am keen to
expand my knowledge of his family and possibly visit locations of relevance.
