RE: [Bann Valley] 1718 Immigrants who settled in Maine

Hi,
My name is Darryl Miller and I live in Alberta, Canada. My direct connection on the Miller side was Alexander Miller, who left Ireland permanently with his family - wife Mary?, three sons Joseph (~1712), James (~1714), Samuel (January 15, 1716) and daughter Mary (~1717) in October of 1718 and settled in Saco Maine.

Alexander was the Master of a ship - the "Elizabeth and Mary" that sailed out of Londonderry, Ireland bound for Boston. On arrival in Boston with his family, he gave up his Captaincy and his first mate Robert Homes took over and renamed the ship, "Elizabeth" This was a small ship for its day, being only 45 tons.

Primary Source: Public Records Office, C.O. 5/848, f.83
Secondary Source: "Ulster Emigration" (Use browser "Bookmark" or "Back" to return to this page.)

Ship and Passenger Information:
Burthen: 45 tons
100 passengers (names not available at present)

According to the Boston Newsletter he made his last trip in 1718:
Boston to Ireland - in the March 24-31, 1718 Newsletter
Ireland to Boston - in the October 20-27, 1718 Newsletter

[Name Not Given.] Alexander Miller, master, Robert Homes, mate, from [not given] ; arr. [not given] at Boston. Cleared for Ireland (N. L. March 24-31, 1718; Rev. W. Homes in his Diary says sailed April 10th).
Mary and Elizabeth, Alexander Miller, master, Robert Remes [Homes], mate, from Londonderry; arr. Oct. at Boston (N. L. Oct. 20-27, 1718; also Rev. W. Homes 's Diary). Full of passengers. Cleared (N. L. Pec. 8-15, 1718)

1719
Elizabeth, ship, Robert Homes, master, from Ireland ; arr. Nov. 3 ?, at Hull and Boston. (Mass. Resolves, 1719, chapter 68.) About 150 passengers, some with small- pox. List of warnings (Record Com. Rept. 13, p. 63).
1720
[Name Not Given.] Robert Homes, from Ireland; arr. Aug. 28, at Boston. (Rev. W. Homes 's Diary

Alexander's son Samuel was born in Derry County. He married a Margaret Caldwell in Portsmouth, NH in 1736

Although his ship left from Londonderry - family history says the Miller's had lived in Belfast - son James was the first settler in Belfast, Maine (1770) and won the right to name the town in a coin toss - he chose his birthplace - Belfast, Ireland.

Another son Alexander was born in Saco, Maine ~ 1725.

Would anyone have any information on the Irish side of their lives before they left Ireland. I am led to believe that they were Lowland Scots from the Dumfrieshire area and arrived in Ireland around 1610.

I would appreciate any help in making a connection in Ireland.

John Darryl Miller

Hello Sue

John Jameson is ejjameson@xxxxxxx
I will be in touch with you again as our ideas develop, we want to try to tell the people in Ireland something of the stories of the relatives who left in 1718 and were never heard of again on this side of the Atlantic.
Not yet sure what will be the outcome; we need to get down to work on it pretty soon!

Any other people with 1718 links, please note and do get in touch!

Linde
