RE: [Bann Valley] Re: Hello

I have found 13 spelling variations in the surname of one person, I was
told there were many more. This particular instance did not occur in
Ireland. I assume she was illiterate, but the ability to read various
handwritten records, the state of handwriting, faded records etc could all
contribute to the confusion. Indexes, in whatever form do not always
accurately reflect the actual record.

McFetridge seems particularly likely to be variably spelled. I am currently
looking at the earlier history of the family because I'm interested in an
Archibald MacPhedris who was a ship's captain and merchant in Portsmouth New
Hampshire, involved in the story of the 1718 emigration from the Bann
valley. His very impressive house is still on show in Portsmouth. His family
seem to be from Ballymoney. The names is spelled MacPheadris MacPhetris ,
anyhow you want, and there are lots of others too

Spelling is immaterial! Most common people could not write and when names
were written down, the scribe would write what sounded correct.
