That is always a danger! There are however only a few places where I
actually disagree with your interpretation, one springs to mind...
You dah Ckamas. Yes - it looks like that, but of course cannot be. However
if you compare what is there with one of the Thomas names, you'll see
that's what it is - written with a dip pen with not a lot of ink! The
original book would probably show a scratch mark where no ink was
deposited!

I have already sent Linde the first part of the list as I have done it.
Attached is the done bit so far. This is re-writing the list for the www
rather than for paper. How does it read to you?

We are forced to interpret it: o and a are interchangeable in script.
Which was it? When the scribe miss spells one name in a family, should you
correct it or not? A comment is required IMO and these comments can make
the list nicer to read.

I spent a time puzzling over Elizabeth Waid 'Meharg'. But had you noticed
that she is lightly crossed out? I tried to read 'Married' or something.
No luck. But it's clearly a comment.

By and large I am impressed with the effort you've put in - and with your
accuracy. It's going to be a very useful archive.

One reason for re-processing it as I have is that by careful re-checking I
fix it in my own mind. Some of the doubts will vanish when we compare the
later lists with it, and maybe also the 1821 census.

We have to interpret. An interpretation of a copy must miss some of the
original, e.g scratch marks, shine of the ink, maybe other visual texture
clues as to what is ink, what is dirt, what are creases. Sometimes there
appears a crossing out - or is it? Crossings out are sometimes marked
'dead' sometimes not. Are some of the crossings out undrlinings that have
missed - or is the name written over a line? Sometimes the crossings out
appear to be major deletions as if removing an error. We cannot judge
these - but we can point out that we think to avoid being too definitive.

Commenting on these can actually make the whole moreintersting, and in due
course it would be nice to cross refer - possibly in these comments - to
other data.

The way I have laid it out, the data is clearly demarcated from the
comments. That is what I believe is important - if you don't do thay
people may thing your opinions are re-statements of facts, not
interpretations.

> I would like for you to look at the originals for 1840 and 1850.

In due course: although you'de done a huge amount, enen proofing it
against the copy is not a small task.

We have 74 people currently on the list. They almost all join via the www
site, probably lots investigate, then move on. Genealogy is popular. Your
site is actually useful to anyone descending from Ulster. You could
gradually get more hits.

Anyway, see what you think of the attach1,1ed.

Title: 1796 Garvagh Church Visitation List

The original of this list is of course not in the best condition and some names are scarcely legible. It was of course writen in ink with a quill pen so ink density varies greatly and there are many smudges, including some where the pages were turned without blotting.

The list was originally obtained and transcribed to electronic format by Lavonne Kennedy Bradfield. Subsequently is was re-checked and marked up in HTML for the WWW by Richard John Torrens. Some of the comments are Lavonne's, others are RJT's.

The original is in a notebook with pages some 5" x 8" with two columns of names to a page. This was photocopied and the photocopy used to prepare these notes. Sometimes the photocopy misses the edge of the original and a name is bisected.

Any transcription such as this has to be an interpretation. So we have added notes to explain what we are interpreting and to try and show when there may be doubt. These notes appear after the family to which they refer.

Some of the families have been crossed out with a large X through the family, presumably they had moved, or they could be errors, corrected. These families are commented. Some of the individual names have also been crossed out: these are so marked in the HTML. Sometimes there is a note 'Dead' sometimes none. Had these people died, left home or were some errors that are being corrected?

The original list had all the families numbered and all individuals were also numbered. This numbering must be original because of the layout, so it has been reproduced below.

Sometimes additional families have been inserted in gaps and new members have been added: these additions are of course un-numbered. There is however no evidence to show when these additions were made. However it is very clear that the list was worked on several times. The person numbers must have been added after the main list was compiled. But as some persons are not numbered, these must presumably have been entered after the numbering, indicating at least three sessions on the original, presumably more.

A list of the names of the respective towns families and individuals belonging to the presbyterian congregation of Garvagh as taken by James Brown in his course of visiting from the 19th January 1796

Then below that, in spare space to to right of the first family appear two dates thus:

1812
1796

  16

This would make it seem likely that the original was updated some 16 years after the first listing was made, but any difference is script styles is not easily evident so one cannot be certain when any alterations were made.

The last name is displaced to the right and the forename is scarcely readable. It could be longer or double barrelled, though such names are rare on this list.

------ 4 ------
18 (Hugh) Torrance
19 Jennet Torrance
20 (Mary) Torrance
21 Serah Torrance

The above family is in the crumpled corner of the first sheet and is scarcely readable. However we do know that there was a Hugh Torrance living in Mayoughill at that time. This appears to be he.

Although apparently listed as two families, both of these families are crossed out, with two Xs through the first and one through the second and the words 'Removed to Ballyagan' written through the first. The inference is that both have moved.

Jas Conaway, inserted at bottom of this family, is spelt with one n, the others with two. This would indicate that the corrections may have been by a different person to the originals.

These three are together, though James is poorly legible. Below them is a gap, a line in the shape of an arc, then follows the next name, seemimgly in isolation.

The name Margrat Gilmore is heavily crossed out as if to indicate an error.

    Arch Gilmore
    Isabella Gilmore
    Willm Gilmore
    John Gilmore
    Thomas Gilmore
    Archd Gilmore
These names appear at the top of a column. The first 5 are faded and Archd Gilmore has clearly been written later as it partially overlaps the name above and is darker.

There are other Herralds in the list - this scribe doesn't seem to like double letters1

The name Deborah seems unlikely, yet D--ora seems indisputable. Mising two letters could be e or i and h or d.
The name following that is indecipherable. It does sppear to start J, but this is feint.
There is little doubt that the family is Dinnen - though a name that does not appear eleswhere on this list.

352 John Knox
353 Mary Knox
354 Brise Knox

425 Margrat Turner

Then the following note appears:
John Gray with the family of C: Gray entered in moneydig
And in the margin beside this and the next family:

Samuel Palluc
Margrat Palluc
Eliz
Wm
The name Palluc is nowhere else listed, but it seems to be the name here.

----- No number ------
Alexr McAtley
Serah McAtley
Jane McAtley

The above surmame is diffficult to read, could also be McAskey. It does not match any other name on this list.

Bellury

Bellury is not numbered and appears to have been inserted later with the following family in a space ahead of the main Bellury entry.

----- No number ------
    William Wallace
    Elinar Wallace
    Jean Wallace

It is difficult to find any other way to read 'Bathsheba', rare though the name is.

This seems to imply that these crossed out families are a mistake and also that the person numbers were not allocated when the original list was compiled but at a later date.

William Waid Junr has a line through William only, then an underline below William Waid.
Jennet is inserted between the names.
The last name appears to be Biddey, but since it is part overwritten by Jennet, is debateable.
Elizabeth Waid 'Meharg'. The word Merarg is a comment, and Elizabeth's name appears ro be crossed out, although this crossing out is faint and inaccurate. The first letter appears to be a capital M, then e or posibly i, h or ma6be l, then a blur and the last letter has a descender. I can make no sense of it!
