[Torrens List] My mysterious great grandmother
My great grandparents were William James Hamilton Hall (whose
geneological information is quite extensive) and Margaret Torrens.
They immigrated to the U.S. separately; he in 1889 and she in 1894 or
1895. A geneology of the Hall family done by a relative in Ireland
states that Margaret was from Garvagh and that she had a grandmother
who was a Hamilton.
Her birth date is variously given as 1875, 1876, 1877 or 1880 -
perhaps she didn’t think it was proper for the census-taker to ask.
Her daughter recorded her birth as September 1, 1875. She died in New
York in 1958.
I have not been able to find her immigration records, names of
siblings or parents, or records in Ireland, and would very much like
to. Her story always piqued my interest; she didn’t like to old man
she was betrothed to so she slipped out with some “borrowed” money and
came to the U.S. as a teen.
I would appreciate any help in learning more about her family.
