Hi Derek,
Thank you for letting me know of your research at St. Patrick's
Church of Ireland in Coleraine. I didn't
receive this information and am interested in it. I'm thinking Mary
Barr Torrens' mother, Mary Maines Barr,
might have been from Scotland. I did some research at the Coleraine
library when Dave and I were there in
2007, but couldn't find anything helpful. Meanwhile, I have
conflicting information on Thomas Torrance's wife,
Mary Barr and her mother, Mary Maines Barr.
Mary Barr Torrens (Torrance). Married my great grandfather,
Thomas Torrens/Torrance.
Thomas DOB 15 Jun 1831 Christened Garvagh 1st Pres, 28 Nov 1831.
DOD 19 Jan 1916, Brooklyn IA.
Research on Mary Barr Torrens:
Source: Birth. Brooklyn, IA newspaper obituary listed birth as 15
Oc 1834, County Londonderry.
Brooklyn Iowa gravestone says birthdate was 15 Oct 1832.
Source: "History of Poweshiek County (IA)" says she was born NEAR
Coleraine, N. Ireland.
Source: Poweshiek County death records for her son, Thomas Torrance
(my g. grandfather), say his
Mother, Mary Barr, was born in Scotland.
Source: Notes from Thomas Torrance, daughter, Catharine Torrance
(notes from 1930's which have
proven quite accurate) list Mary's parents as William Barr and Mary
Maines (Scotch). William and Mary
Barr's children, in addition to Mary, were Susanna (Boyd), Ruth
(Taylor), William (married twice), Benjamn
(wife, Mary Shaw), George (soldier, possibly killed in U.S. Civil
War), Jane (Hatfield), and Ann (who was
burned)
After all of that , I still don't have primary source of her birth
place. Actually, I may just have to settle for what I
have.
It's good to be motivated to look at my family history!
Best Regards,
Judy
